In all our operations we seek the right balance between the environmental care and profitability, for instance by:
- We make careful use of natural resources: Suiker Unie is constantly alert to the need to reduce manufacturing emissions, cut water consumption and replace fossil fuels with green energy.
- Maximizing the sugar yield per hectare: A higher beet yield per hectare and higher sugar content per beet has a direct impact on our energy consumption.
- Suiker Unie advises growers on crop protection and the use of fertilizers. Where they are needed, we use agents that are effective yet have the least environmental impact.
- Minimizing the number of transport kilometers, of both the sugar beet and the sugar products, is a constant concern.
- Calculating the carbon footprint and take measures to reduce this.
- Our constant ambition is to reduce our energy consumption. We have gone to great lengths to cut energy consumption over the years. It is now already 42% less than in 1990.
- Production of biogas from residual flows. The biogas will be upgraded to green gas. In total, we can offer 12.5 million m3 of this gas to the national natural gas grid, enough for 9,000 homes.
