Two types of sugar syrup, two indispensable flavours
Suiker Unie makes two sugar syrups: ordinary sugar syrup and Melado®.
Sugar syrup is a blend of sugar, invert sugar and purified molasses. Molasses is the syrupy liquid obtained from raw sugar beet during the refining process. It is a thick, dark brown, sweet syrup with a characteristic flavour.
Sugar syrup is used, among other ingredients, in the production of treacle waffles and cough syrups.
Melado® has a higher percentage of molasses. This gives this sugar syrup a darker colour and stronger flavour. This flavour is not pure sweet but rather sweet-salty.
Melado® is used in liquorice and soy sauce. Furthermore Melado® is a natural colouring, for example in (rye) bread.
