New bulk trucks running entirely on Suiker Unie’s own green gas

Technical advances recently made it possible to have gas-fuelled trucks transport train weights of up to 50 tonnes. The 410 hp tractor units will make Suiker Unie’s bulk transport operations even more sustainable. The four trucks hit the road to deliver sugar to customers for the first time this week.

The trucks have eight gas tanks that can be filled with biogas at the sugar factories in Dinteloord and Vierverlaten. Suiker Unie is the biggest green gas producer in the Netherlands; its biomass digesters produce some 30 million m3 of biogas every year out of side streams from the sugar beet. The biogas trucks have at least the same supple driving characteristics as diesel trucks and are also quieter. The drivers’ first impressions have been very favourable.

90% less CO2
The 410 hp gas engines emit 90% less CO2 than traditional diesel engines. This represents a reduction of about 160 tonnes of CO2 per truck travelling the customary distance of 150,000 km a year.

Suiker Unie will test the four biogas trucks – three from Scania and one from Iveco – in detail. The test results will be evaluated later this year so that Suiker Unie can take a further decision on the expansion of its sustainable truck fleet.
